As Scotland’s largest city as well as the third largest after London and Birmingham in the whole of the UK the bustling cosmopolitan conurbation of Glasgow has a lot to offer.

It will therefore come as no surprise to singles looking to arrange their first date in Glasgow to discover that they are positively spoilt for choice when it comes to the venue and activity for this important occasion.

The city’s stunning mainly Victorian architecture, thriving arts scene, miles of wide open spaces, both within the city and surrounding it, as well as a wonderfully broad choice of restaurants and eateries, means that there is plenty of choice to suit all tastes, interests and budgets.

The first important decision for the date is where to meet. This should ideally be in a prominent public place, close to all the amenities of the city centre. Good choices would be outside the imposing Glasgow City Chambers in George Square, beside the Tolbooth Steeple or in the grounds of the 13th Century Glasgow Cathedral. Other distinctive city landmarks include the modern Clyde Auditorium (commonly known as the Armadillo), the Doulton Fountain, and the Clyde Arc.

Having met and perhaps spent some time viewing the landmarks you'll probably be ready for some refreshment. As you would expect from a city of this size there are is no end of choice when it comes to cafes, bars, and restaurants. The usual chains are heavily represented if that's your thing but as always, it's the independent ones that provide some of the best in food and drink.

For couples looking for a traditional Scottish menu the top restaurants are; the Black Sheep Bistro, Number 16, Fanny Trollope’s, Shandon Belles and the unforgettably named Two Fat Ladies at the Buttery.

The city’s best Italian restaurants include Sapori d’Italia, La Lanterna, and Qua Italian.

If the couple would prefer an Indian menu they may wish to book a table for two at Charcoals, Punjabi Charing Cross, or Mother India; whilst Opium and Lychee Oriental are amongst the city’s highly rated Chinese restaurants.

After a satisfying lunch, how about a stroll around Glasgow's other attractions. Perhaps a spot of window shopping or retail therapy can be enjoyed in the city’s main retail areas: Buchanan Galleries, Princes Square and the St.Enoch Centre. The more cultured can visit the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum or the Gallery of Modern Art; or perhaps enjoy matinee performance at the King’s Theatre or the Theatre Royal.

For evening entertainment there are live music venues and general entertainment arenas like King Tut's Wah-Wah Hut (contemporary bands), SSE Hydro, O2 ABC, and the O2 Glasgow.

So, from enjoying a well-prepared meal with a good bottle of wine in a romantic setting, before taking in the city’s myriad sites and attractions and enjoying the area’s lively music scene, there is no shortage of things to see and do during any first date spent in Glasgow.
